Mount Gapy

Mount Gapy is a vast, dome-shaped hill reaching 470 meters above sea level, situated between the Bóbr River and the town of Jeżów Sudecki. Formerly known as Kappenberg or Kapturowa Góra, the hill is covered with spruce and beech forests. Its western slope descends steeply toward the river, while the other slopes gently fall into the ancient Bóbr valley. The hill is built of granite gneisses and Rumburk granites, where minerals such as sillimanite and andalusite can be found. The main attractions are three picturesque rock formations: Progi, Czyżynki, and Sośnik. From Sośnik, which features a viewpoint with an informational board, visitors can enjoy a panorama of the Jeżów Sudecki commune and surrounding peaks, including Wieżyca, Rysianka, and Zamczysko with traces of a medieval castle. From the Progi rocks, one can admire the Kaczawskie Mountains, the Jelenia Góra Valley, and the Karkonosze range. In the past, painters often captured the city panorama with the Karkonosze in the background from this spot. The area is protected by the Bóbr Valley Landscape Park. The hill has a dense network of forest roads and paths, ideal for walking. One of the historic trails was named after Duchess Charlotte. Access to Mount Gapy is possible from the PTTK trail Perła Zachodu (about 2.9 km, 40 minutes) or from Jelenia Góra (about 3.1 km, 50 minutes). It is a perfect destination for families and nature lovers, offering beautiful views and a close encounter with nature.
