Museum of Sacred Art in Kamenz

The Museum of Sacred Art in Kamenz is housed in the Gothic, still consecrated Church of St. Anne at Schulplatz 5. It was opened in 2011 by the City of Kamenz and the Evangelical Lutheran Church Community. The museum showcases the city's artistic treasures from 1400 to 1700, with a special focus on medieval Franciscan art and Reformation-era art. The highlight of the collection is a group of five late Gothic altars created between 1500 and 1520, which originally belonged to the former monastery and have remained together to this day. Display cases feature such treasures as a reliquary from 1400, a figure of the Christ Child from the time of Martin Luther, and the painting "Law and Grace" by Wolfgang Krodel from 1542. The museum is an important stop on the Via Sacra, a route connecting monuments in Upper Lusatia, Lower Silesia, and northern Bohemia. It also regularly hosts special exhibitions on cultural-historical themes and contemporary art, and in 2014 it received the First Prize of the Foundation for the Preservation of Church Architectural Monuments in Germany.
