Wleń Castle (Lenno)

Wleń Castle (Lenno) is a picturesque ruin of a medieval stronghold situated on a hill above the town of Wleń in the Bóbr Valley, in Lower Silesia. The site is considered the oldest brick castle in Silesia, with its origins dating back to the second half of the 12th century, when Duke Bolesław the Tall initiated the construction of the first masonry residence. The work was continued by his son, Duke Henry the Bearded, who completed the Romanesque castle complex consisting of a residential house, a chapel, and a hexagonal defensive tower. Today, visitors can admire the preserved fragments of walls and the tower, which allow them to imagine the former splendor of the residence. The castle is open to visitors daily, and it is cared for by the Warownia Consortium, formed by the Association „Wieża Książęca w Siedlęcinie” and the Association of Sudetes Guides. The site lies on the Trail of Piast Castles, making it an attractive point for history and architecture enthusiasts. Due to the lack of its own parking lot, it is recommended to leave the car in Wleń and reach the castle on foot via the yellow or green hiking trail, also exploring the beautifully renovated market square of the town along the way. This is a great proposal for families with children, school groups, and all those wishing to discover the medieval heritage of Lower Silesia.
