📍 Kraków, PL

Podelwie Tenement House is a historic tenement house located in Krakow, at 32 Grodzka Street, in the Old Town. It was erected at the beginning of the 15th century, and around 1430 a house sign depicting a lion bending over two lion cubs was placed above the portal, from which the building's name derives. In the 16th century, the tenement belonged to the Boner family, and in 1562 Jan Boner sold it to the city, which owned it until 1809. Between 1817 and 1830, the building underwent a thorough renovation, and after a fire in 1850 it was rebuilt, acquiring a classicist facade. In 1924, a third floor was added. Currently, it is a three-story, basemented building made of brick, plastered, on a rectangular plan. The facade is seven-axial, with a wrought-iron gate in the central axis, above which the aforementioned sign is located. The sign from 1431 is the oldest preserved house sign in Krakow and refers to medieval bestiaries, depicting a lion reviving dead cubs with his breath. On the ground floor, there are large display windows of commercial premises. The tenement is listed in the register of monuments and constitutes a valuable example of medieval architecture with later transformations.
