Olsztyn Castle is a picturesque ruin of a Gothic stronghold located in the town of Olsztyn in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. It is part of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests – a network of medieval castles built on limestone rocks. Originally owned by Bishop Jan Muskata of Kraków, the castle was expanded in the 14th century by King Casimir the Great, who turned it into a powerful fortress. Unfortunately, invasions by the forces of Maximilian Habsburg and the Swedes, later dismantling of parts of the walls for church construction, and erosion of the rock foundation led to the gradual decay of the castle. Today, only fragments of walls and towers remain, but they are still impressive. Climbing the castle hill rewards visitors with beautiful views of the ruins and the surrounding area. The site is free to enter and open seasonally, with public transport and bike parking nearby. Olsztyn Castle is an excellent destination for families, couples, and groups of friends looking to combine sightseeing with outdoor activities.
