Castle of the Warmian Chapter in Olsztyn

The Castle of the Warmian Chapter in Olsztyn is the oldest monument in the city, built around 1348 on the banks of the Łyna River. This Gothic stronghold witnessed the turbulent history of Warmia, repelling Lithuanian attacks and playing a role in the Thirteen Years' War. From 1516 to 1521, Nicolaus Copernicus lived here as administrator of the chapter's estates. His astronomical table, preserved on the cloister wall, can still be seen today. The castle now houses the Museum of Warmia and Mazury. Visitors can explore Gothic chambers, a courtyard with a stone figure of an Old Prussian woman brought from Barciany, a disused well, and a viewing tower. It is especially appealing to history and astronomy enthusiasts, as well as families with children. Guided tours are available, offering deeper insight into the castle's secrets.
