Siebeneicher Tenement House

The Siebeneicher Tenement House is a historic residential building located in Kraków, in the Old Town district, at 7 Grodzka Street. The history of this site dates back to the 14th century, when the first masonry, single-story house was erected here. Over the following centuries, the building was gradually expanded and heightened, gaining a first, second, and third floor. In the mid-16th century, Mateusz Siebeneicher established a printing workshop in the tenement, and his son Jakub developed the business by opening a bookstore in 1593. After Jakub's death in 1604, his widow Anna Siebeneicherowa managed the establishment for six years. In the first half of the 19th century, the interiors received a classicist decor, including wall paintings on the first floor depicting, among others, a seaport and a rocky port with a waterfall. The tenement suffered during the great fire of Kraków in 1850, when the top floor burned down; reconstruction was completed in 1876. In 1976, the building, along with its western annex and courtyard, was entered into the register of historic monuments. The site is of interest to history and architecture enthusiasts, and its location in the center of Kraków makes it easy to visit.
