Srebrna Góra and Srebrnogórska Fortress

Srebrna Góra is a small village in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, situated on a pass between the Sowie Mountains and the Bardzkie Mountains. The place is famous for the largest mountain fortress in Europe – the Srebrnogórska Fortress, which is one of the main attractions of the region. The name of the village comes from silver deposits discovered here in the past, and the settlement itself was founded in the 14th century as a mining town. In 1536, Srebrna Góra received town rights, but lost this status after 1945. The fortress was built between 1765 and 1777 on two hills: Forteczna Góra and Ostróg, covering over 100 hectares and stretching for 3 kilometres. Visiting includes two main forts: Fort Ostróg and Fort Donjon, located on opposite sides of the pass. Fort Ostróg, built in 1769–1772, is situated in the Bardzkie Mountains and offers guided tours in a relaxed, military atmosphere. In its courtyard, you can see military equipment, and during the walk – a kitchen and the deepest well in the entire complex, measuring 84 metres. From the fort's crown, there is a view of Fort Donjon on the other side. The drive from Wrocław takes about 1.5 hours, and from Kłodzko – 30 minutes. Parking is located on the pass, from where it takes about 10 minutes to walk to Fort Ostróg and 20 minutes to Fort Donjon. A tractor-train also runs from the parking lot to Fort Donjon for 5 PLN, and all-day parking costs 10 PLN. The fortress is open seasonally, and it is worth reserving at least half a day for visiting. It is an excellent place for families, school groups, and anyone interested in military history.
