Silver Mountain Fortress

The Silver Mountain Fortress, also known as the Silesian Gibraltar, is the largest mountain fortress in Europe and one of the continent's most valuable military monuments. It is located in Srebrna Góra in Lower Silesia, towering over the Srebrna Pass. Built between 1765 and 1777 by order of King Frederick II of Prussia, designed by Ludwig Wilhelm Regler, it was intended to defend Silesia, which Prussia had seized. The complex consists of several forts, including the Donjon, and hundreds of casemates and underground corridors that can be explored with a guide dressed in a historical Napoleonic-era soldier's uniform. Walking through the labyrinths is a journey into the military past, though the living conditions of the soldiers were extremely harsh. From the fortress's crown, there is a magnificent view of the Sudetes, including the Bardzkie and Sowie Mountains, Mount Ślęża, and the Śnieżnik Massif. Inside, it is cool and damp, with temperatures in the underground not exceeding 10 degrees Celsius, so it is advisable to bring a warmer layer. For children, it is a fascinating history lesson, and for adults, a chance to see one of the most important examples of modern defensive architecture in Europe. On site, there is a café, restaurant, gift shop, and parking, and during the season on weekends a shuttle runs from the pass.
