Old Mine in Wałbrzych

The Old Mine in Wałbrzych is a Centre of Science and Art located in the revitalised complex of the former "Julia" hard coal mine, which operated until 1996. The site, at 29 Wysockiego Street, offers one of the most authentic underground tourist routes in Poland. Visitors can learn about the history of coal mining in the Wałbrzych region and see unique above-ground post-industrial buildings. The underground route includes a training adit with mining workstations and a corridor used for transporting stone. A special highlight is the guides – former miners who share stories about working underground. The complex combines museum, educational and cultural functions, offering, among others, the SOWA Zone of Discovery, Imagination and Activity, workshops, exhibitions and concerts. On site there are the "Sztygarówka" café, the Coolturalna Montownia restaurant and guest rooms. The Old Mine is recognised as a valuable monument of technical culture and is a point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage ERIH. It is open daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and guided tours last about 100 minutes.
