Peat bog near Zieleniec

The peat bog near Zieleniec is a floristic nature reserve located in the Bystrzyckie Mountains, about a 30-minute walk from the center of Zieleniec in Duszniki-Zdrój. The reserve covers part of a 270-hectare peat bog consisting of two basins: Topielisko and Czarne Bagno. The bog formed about 8,000 years ago on an impermeable substrate of marl and sandstone, and the peat layer reaches up to 8 meters in thickness. The vegetation is unique – mosses, sedges, sundews, dwarf pines, and spruces create a landscape found nowhere else in the Sudetes. Wooden boardwalks have been built for visitors, protecting the fragile ecosystem and allowing safe movement across the area. The site is open all year round and can be visited free of charge. It is an ideal walk for families, seniors, and groups – whether as a short trip or as a complement to a longer stay in Zieleniec. In spring, bird song fills the air; in summer, dragonflies can be observed; and in autumn, the colors of the bog mosses are stunning. The reserve is often compared to the Siberian taiga and impresses with its wildness and richness of nature in every season.
